Perth-based practice Milieu Creative was asked to design a forward-thinking workplace that put wellness first.
The client, mining services company Mineral Resources (MinRes), saw designing their new headquarters in Osborne Park as an opportunity to create a ‘wellness centre’ for their employees rather than what we have come to know as a more conventional workplace. Their design intent has translated into a building that creates an environment for optimal comfort and performance for its occupants.
Creating a workspace that promotes wellness starts with enabling a connection to the outdoors. In the case of Mineral Resources’ headquarters, a central skylight and thermally optimised floor-to-ceiling glazing ensure an abundance of natural light at all times. The building responds to the varying intensity of light throughout the day to maximise performance according to Milieu Creative’s managing director Davina Bester. “[The building] automatically modifies the internal lighting to soothe and aid human circadian rhythms while the BMS [building management system] intuitively and invisibly modifies the window blinds to shield or allow the sun rays to permeate.”
In addition to a gym, coffee and yoga classes, Mineral Resources' headquarters has a dedicated employee restaurant. Setting a new standard in Perth, the restaurant provides employees with access to healthy, nourishing food to help fuel a successful career. Those who work in the building have the restaurant for their exclusive use.
Other facets of employee health are taken care of with an integrated mental health clinic on the ground floor and a bespoke medical facility with fitness equipment and audio testing.
Beyond the features of the building itself, the approach of putting the user and their wellness first flowed through to the furniture and soft finishes. Mobilia worked collaboratively with Milieu Creative from the very beginning of the furniture selection process right through to the opening of the building. Each piece was chosen for its quality and unrivalled attention to detail. “Creating a residential feel within a workplace environment was a focal point during the design process and the selection of furniture played a significant role in achieving this,” explains Davina.
The furniture includes timeless and iconic design pieces carefully selected to complement and enhance the space. “The Capitol Complex and Redondo armchairs have created an impact on the level 12 restaurant area. Additionally, the Poltrona Frau Get Back sofa and Archibald armchairs play an important part in contributing to the success and feel of the boardroom lounge.”

“It was important that everyone who experiences the space gets to enjoy the beautiful furniture, whether it be when visiting the building or working in it daily. The furniture adds to the feeling of comfort and luxury supporting the inherent wellness the building offers,” added Davina.
Mineral Resources' headquarters represents a new direction in workplace design. One that nurtures the wellness of employees and allows them to reach their full potential. From the building itself to the interiors and soft finishes, it is a showcase of intelligent design that is guided by people and their needs.
